Early last week, I was informed that a Thai rock star was in town and that we should all go. Never mind that I didn't know who he was or that I wouldn't be able to understand a word he was saying – these we minor details. A room in cheap motel in Phuket Town was promptly booked, and the rest of the week was spent listening to Sek Loso on YouTube at full volume in the office.
Saturday afternoon we set off to Phuket Town, 20kms south east of little Kamala Beach. 40 minutes later my butt was numb and tingling but we made it one piece. After a cheap and cheerful dinner on the street – 40 baht noodles – we put on our glowing devil horns (essential headwear for a Thai concert) and headed to the venue. It was a live music festival and given that I didn't know the lead act, there was zero chance that I would know the support acts. However it is surprisingly easy to sing along to a band when you don't know the words, as your yelling just gets mixed in with the rest of the noise.
Sek Loso came on and my study for the week paid off – I recognized songs! We pushed our way to the front and jumped up and down like we had been fans our whole lives. It was a great concert and Sek noticed us in the crowd – we were kind of hard to miss , 4 white girls wearing glowing red devils horns. We were a little star struck.
After the concert we headed to the Timber Hut, a bar that was a favorite among the locals. Getting there was was my first experience on a motorbike taxi – big fan! What's not to love about paying someone half the prize of a cab and jumping on the back of their bike! There was an awesome band playing at the bar, so again, we barged to the front and started dancing like crazy people. Sounds ridiculous, but good bands are hard to find in Phuket!
Fabulous fabulous weekend all round. Thanks Team Loso!
