I have never loved the fact that I am a light sleeper, but I do try to look at the positives. I’ll always hear a robber trying to break in, I get to listen to the sound of rain on the roof and when I have kids I will hear them sneaking out.
The downside of this becomes apparent when I travel, especially in a mixed dorm.

After drifting off to sleep the other night I awoke to the sound of a freight train. I was confused – we were nowhere near a train line. Then I realised, the guy in our dorm was snoring.

This guy would have won the world championship had such a competition existed. I can’t believe he didn’t wake himself up. And it didn’t seem to matter how he was sleeping – side, back, front – the noise was the same volume. And just when you think it might be easing off out would come a sound especially loud it was a wonder anyone in the next dorm was asleep.
While I understand this is not a problem that he can really do a lot about, I find myself less than sympathetic lying awake at 3.04am.

I fill my ears with the sound of Indian pan pipes from my ipod and thank god that the 2 English guys down the hall are not out tonight as well. Another night of a 4am homecoming (complete with yelling ‘go on, do it’ – god knows what they were doing) added to the snoring would just have been too much.
Mental note – must invest in ear plugs. And female only dorms.
