Friday morning I find myself madly stuffing clothes in a bag. Nothing like packing at the last minute. I was on my way to Cairns. After disrobing & making my way through security, I was as always, ‘randomly’ selected for an explosives test. I could tell this lady was enthralled in her job, as she happily chatted away about the new Super Mario 3D game she had just bought, whilst swabbing parts of my clothing as I redressed in front of her.
After an uneventful 2hr flight I arrived in Cairns. For those who haven’t been, GO! I love Cairns & try & get here at least once a year. I love the weather & the laid back lifestyle. Though the beaches are 20mins up the road, they are worth it (as long as you stay in the enclosed swimming area to avoid crocs). Then, take a drive an hour north along the best coastal drive around and you’ll find Port Douglas. It’s the drive that’s the best part though – beautiful hills roll right down to the beach.
Got off the plane in almost oppressive heat & humidity – I love it! It was the type of heat where everything you wear sticks to you instantly. Where when you pour a cold glass of wine it warms to room temperature in minutes….Just means you have to drink faster… The girls in the office took me for lunch at Mondos, which appears to be a Cairns institution. Right on the waterfront & great food. You can feel the laid back lifestyle instantly here. No one is in a hurry to do anything here. I love Cairns.
