This weekend saw me escape to my favourite place ever…Fraser Island.

Growing up in Hervey Bay, I spent a lot of time on the island, and have many many fond memories.  I love going back.  It is a stunning place and always makes me feel so relaxed, so when the opportunity came up to go over for the weekend, I locked it in the diary!

There was a special interstate visitor for this trip, my fabulous cousin Sonia came up from Victoria to experience the wonder that is Fraser.  Son arrived late (very late!) on Friday night, but we still managed to get up early so Son could enjoy breakfast on the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, overlooking Brisbane city.  (Breakfast was average but the company was great!)

Spent a relaxing day driving up the Hervey Bay, which involved a brief stopover in Noosa to enjoy the beach and purchase matching supercool aviator sunglasses!  All the beautiful people were out for the school holidays, and we spent sometime people watching through our new glasses.  Was a gorgeous day, and so nice to be out in the sunshine.

Friday night we assembled the cast for the weekend, me, Son, Lorraine and Sally, and caught the last barge to Kingfisher Resort on the island.  Sally owns an amazing house, right beside the resort on the beach, and this was to be our base for the weekend. Saturday was spent on the beach and hanging out at this amazing house.  We walked along the beach to McKenzie’s Jetty, which was originally used by ships when sand mining occured on the island.  The island is now world heritage listed and is to be preserved.  If you have never been, all I can say is GO.  Go now.  White beaches, perfect blue water and amazing lakes, sand dunes and creeks.  Go now!  We did even manage to see one of the islands natural inhabitants, a dingo.  (No babies were harmed during the taking of this photo).  I can’t believe how tame they are now, they will just walk right up to you on the beach if you let them (DON’T let them!).   Back in the day, they were so scared of people!

We watched a beach wedding that afternoon from the luxury of our verandah with a glass of wine, and then hit the resort for dinner that night.  Super casual, we fitted in with the tourists, especially when we launched into ‘Summer of 69’ during dinner (along with the music of course!).

Our place for the weekend.

Rockin’ the aviators on the island…

Sunday was more of the same, and we even managed a swim, though the water was cold!  We sadly headed home of the 5pm barge.  It is always so sad to leave such an amazing place.  And, we were going to miss Sundays beach wedding!  On our final night together, Son, Lorraine and I headed for dinner by the beach, with lots of wine…  On the way home, Son discovered the infamous Hervey Bay Shark Show, and decided to climb all over the displays…

Look carefully into the aviators…

Monday we were due to head back to Brisbane so Son could make her 11.30am flight.  The universe had different plans though, with my car not starting Monday morning.  Instead, we hung out until it was fixed, and spent some time wandering by the beach in the sun, before heading back to Brisbane that afternoon.   Fabulous fabulous weekend.  HUGE thanks to all for making it so amazing xx
