As I boarded the 100ft ‘Anaconda 3’ (what happened to the first 2?!) I was a little skeptical. I’m not sure if it was the cyclone just north of us or fact that the yacht was sporting only half a flag that made me a little apprehensive.
(Leaving the harbour)
We were sailing the Whitsundays for 3 days. I am not the biggest fan of the high seas, but it was my job to show off Australia and clearly the Whitsundays are high up on the ‘must see’ list.
Our boat held up to 38 people (including crew) but we only had 35. I think I was the only Australian on board who wasn’t a member of the crew.
(Making the backpackers work!)
After a slightly windy and overcast start, we had a fabulous trip. We saw the famous Whitehaven Beach, snorkeled and sailed.
(The beautiful Whitehaven Beach)
Due to a gale force wind warning we couldn’t make it to our final destination, but we did manage a couple of beautiful dives on the Outer Great Barrier Reef.
We spent the remainder of our time walking the street (yes, there really only is one street in Airlie) and lying by the lagoon. Maybe I’ll make a backpacker out of him yet!
