Oh Switzerland, you are just like the movies. Stunning scenery, chalets everywhere and cows with bells wandering around underneath my bedroom window. So perfect.
You are also VERY expensive.
For the 2nd half of our road trip we zigzagged in and out of Switzerland over a couple of days, visiting Liechtenstein and other parts of the west of Austria. Liechtenstein doesn’t really rate a mention as the city seemed devoid of life and was insanely expensive ($14 for a KEBAB!). The only saving grace was the surrounding mountains and kick arse castle (which is closed to the public).
Back in Switzerland, Chur was much nicer and we enjoyed the afternoon there drinking coffee and me practicing German by reading kids books on the grass.
In the late afternoon we headed to Davos in the mountains. Literally on top of the mountains. I could walk to the snow. Another night in a super cute chalet complete with low ceilings, but this one was built in 1632. Apparently this place is quite famous for skiing and so we spent the night eating home made wood fired pizza, drinking red wine and talking about all things snow related with our host and his friends, who all happened to be avalanche experts!
Driving from Switzerland to Italy the next morning was stunning. I know I have been throwing around that word a lot, but honestly, what else can you say when you are driving through the snow capped Alps! Our highest point was approximately 2300m and the view was incredible!
Our stopover was Bozen, Italy and they just happened to be hosting a food and wine festival. Honestly, these things just seem to follow me around…..
From Italy we headed back to Austria with a pit stop to check out the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner (at 3798m).
Such cute little towns at the bottom of such big mountains!
You can’t get to the peak but we stopped at the lookout and played the tourist. It’s also possible that I made the husband pull over at multiple points along the road so I could take photos.
Don’t you think these photos make it worth it?
Can you see the flags and building behind me?
Our final stop was Zell am See in Austria, beside a beautiful mountain lake at the foot of the Großglockner. Then in was back to G Town to plan our next trip. 🙂
