After the beauty of Plitvice Lakes it was time to head back to the coast – Zadar. We were meeting up with some friends who also happened to be in Zadar at the same time.
While we didn’t get much time in Zadar, I really enjoyed it. I only had one request – I wanted to see the sea organ at sunset. I had heard of this only recently and wanted to see it for myself. There is a series of pipes underneath some steps leading down to the ocean in Zadar, and plays music through tubes when the waves crash against the steps and into the pipes. Very cool.
Take a listen to the video below…
Like Split, Zadar has at it’s heart an old Roman city. Quite spectacular.
We also took a day out to visit Krka National Park, an ACTUAL national park (as opposed to a UNESCO site like Plitvice Lakes was). It was much better organised and signed, but wow…So. Many. People.
Like Plitvice it is composed of a series of waterfalls, however isn’t anywhere near the same size. And it wasn’t as pretty. But still definitely worth the trip.
With only one free day left we decided to visit Pag Island, 40mins north of Zadar. We had crossed through Pag the day before and coming from the mainland to the island was like driving onto the moon. The landscape was a desert – harsh and dry. Farmers had built rock fences across the island to keep in sheep and goats but they were the only things that broke up the landscape.
We explored the other side of the island on our day trip and while it was still quite harsh, it wasn’t such a desert. We visited the Olive Grove and then had lunch beside the crystal clear (but still cold!) water.
Thank you Croatia for a fabulous road trip. A special thanks to Laura, Jen and Simone for making it even better 🙂
