Denmark. You really live up to your name. I have been trying to think about how best to describe you but travel writers before me have already done so well.

Instead I will paint a picture.

You are walking down the street, along the footpath and taking care to look both ways before crossing the dedicated bike lane. But even if you don’t, the considerate bikers will happily stop for you. It seems you are the only person walking – everyone rides everywhere.

Street scene

Everyone around you is beautiful. The girls have a natural untouched beauty about them and ride around town with on bikes with brown paper wrapped parcels of bread or flowers in their baskets. They stop for coffee in gorgeous little cafe’s on the street whilst eating healthy meals.

This place is like something from a movie.

Danish flags in park
I was clearly an unpaid extra in this movie!

When you fly in you see the wind turbines in the ocean. It is a pretty incredible sight. And super efficient. The beach was windy though…not sure I would be keen to swim there!

Lifesavers
Elmar at the beach
Having 4 days gave us plenty of time to explore. We visited the local market, complete with multiple coffee shops, gourmet deli’s and a paleo cafe.

Blue boat on canal

Green boat on canal
We took a boat trip and drifted along the canals that have been modelled on Amsterdam. The city really is quite beautiful and has a unique way of blending the old with the new.

(Houseboats are exceptionally common)

We passed by the famous Little Mermaid statue. I wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about. She has been beheaded twice in her lifetime!

(Winning fuseball at a random table on the street!)

We also spent a day in Malmo, Sweden (Elmar wanted to tick off another country). It was only 30 mins by train and the local festival was on!

Then finally, after a fabulous weekend, this happened…
