Taking a year off work was not an easy decision because I love my job, however volunteering overseas is something I have always wanted to do. After surfing the volunteer placements I still couldn’t find anything that I loved. That left only 1 option – putting myself out there. Given I love Asia, I thought that might be a good place to start. Hunting through Lonely Planet’s recommendations I came across the ‘Phuket has been good to us’ Foundation – www.phukethasbeengoodtous.org
Our mission: Phuket has been good to us Foundation works to improve the economic opportunities and life chances of young people, by funding and implementing high quality, practical English language education in government schools on Phuket Island.
Then, come 1 January I don’t have much of an idea of where I’m going – and I love it! Free! Mexico is high on the list, as is South America. All suggestions welcome. After conversations last night, I think I have added Belize to the list.
I have always figured that there is always ‘more’ out there, or maybe I’ve just wanted more. (I was talking to someone about this last night – I think he just thought I was crazy!) To travel and experience. That’s what Gap Year is about. Bring it on!
