Just outside Taxco there are some caves – Parque Nacional Grutas de Cacahuamilpa – that were supposed to be worth visiting. I packed my things and jumped on the bus for the 30min trip.

I was deposited on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere with only pointed hand signals as directions. Hmm. I lumbered down the hill (yes, this is the correct word) carrying all my worldly possessions and wondered where the hell I was going. Eventually I stumbled upon the caves.

(No need to put it under the bus, my precious bag gets it’s own seat!)

It was so worth it!
The tour goes for almost 1.5hrs and takes you 2km inside the cave system. I have seen a few caves in my time, but these were impressive. It was like walking through football stadium after football stadium. Just when you thought that was it, there would be another chamber. The roof was up to 80m high in some points.

I would love to tell you more, but I was the only English speaker on a Spanish speaking tour. There were lots of stalactites and stalagmites, but my favourite was the one that looked like a Corona bottle. True story! Another highlight of the tour was when a family pulled out a 2l bottle of coke and poured everyone in their family a glass of coke – in the dark in the middle of the caves. What?!
(The shadows make it look like two lovers embracing)

From the caves I caught a taxi to Ixtapan de Sal, home of Ana the Angel….see next blog post 🙂
