After leavinvg the relative comfort of Santiago we hit Valparaiso on the coast. We realised we were going to have to peel back the layers to discover the real city.
Originally it was one of the most important cities in South America as it’s deep water harbour was an necessary stopping point for ships headed to California. The developed from here, howevert the port remains almost the central point of the city.
Covered by a layer of incredible graffiti we realised the only way to actually get to know the city was to do the infamous ‘Where’s Wally?’ walking tour. The tour was incredible. We learnt all out how the city was established and how to look beyond the grit and facade.
(‘Wally’ showing us through one of the old port houses)
(Riding the old trollebuses)
(Sampling local treats!)
You can’t talk about Valpo (I’m so local!) without talking about the amazing graffiti. It covers most of the city and is so bright and colourful that no one can be a bad photographer.
(The graffiti is just part of the city – murals can be enormous)
(Local slide)
(Entry to our hostel – mum blends right in!)
While Valpo is a port city, there are beaches in the surrounding area….and they are packed!
Of course, no trip to this region would be complete without sampling the local wines. We took a tour out to see some of the local wineries. A little different to Australia, here they take you on a tour of all of the winery, no just give you tastings.
