To say I was excited to visit Vancouver and see my friends was an understatement – Angela was flying in from Thailand and we were seeing our friend Cari Banana. To actually have a ‘holiday’ rather than be traveling was going to be a luxury. And everything was planned out so I didn’t even have to think!

(Our first (of many!) selfies after I finally made it out of customs. Single woman coming from Colombia is a giant red flag apparently)

After spending some time in Vancouver I thought it best to dispel some myths about the place…

Myth #1 – It rains all the time

Despite it ‘apparently’ raining right up until we arrived and it forecast to rain the moment the wheels on the plane left the runway, the weather in Vancouver was spectacular. The sun was shining and the temperature reached 18 degrees so the Canadians broke out their summer wardrobes.

We took full advantage of the sunshine and played outdoors. Cari’s parents were amazing taking us everywhere. First stop, the suspension bridge…

(Posing with Karin, Cari’s mum)

(Idiot!)

(Shaky photo on the suspension bridge)

….then we spent time cycling around Stanley Park….

(Admiring the cherry blossoms)

…walking along the seafront and taking ridiculous photos at the dam…

(Angela teaching Karin about lunging photos)

(Gangsta pose)

(Me getting tackled to the ground)

….visited a winery and (at Angela’s request) at Taco Bell…

(Look how excited she is! Not so excited afterwards…yuk!)

(Say cheers)

….and dined at Horseshoe Bay.

And when the weather was a little cooler at night we rugged up and tried to stay warm.

(Hanging out at the drive in. My first time ever!)

Myth #2 – There are lumberjacks, mounted police and bears everywhere

I think we all know that Canadia Land is famous for the above people and animals, yet I believe this to be a severe untruth. We looked out for bears everywhere, but the only animals we saw were bald eagles (very cool) and squirrels. We were a month too early for the festival of the men wearing black and red plaid shirts wielding an axe. And we did try our best to get arrested by a Mountie but with no luck….sorry mum!

(This is as close as I got to a bear)

(Trying everything to get arrested by a mounted policeman…)

(…including climbing the local statues!)
Myth #3 – The snow is basically gone by April
Ok, I know I am no snow bunny, but I know what snow looks like and there was a LOT of it when we visited Grouse Mountain. I rolled in it and made snow angels. I don’t know what these skiers are talking about!

(Totally looking like these could be our skis)

(Ok, snow shoes are much harder to put on than you think!)

(Not sure this is the proper use of the poles)

All up nothing short of a BRILLIANT time in Vancouver. Thank you Cari and family! You really made it special.

We also took a side trip to the infamous Whistler. But you’ll have to read the next blog for that 🙂
