Something as simple as having a picnic or dinner party shouldn’t be any cause for drama, yet here in K Town (aka Kamala) it definitely needs some forward planning.

Last weekend some friends and I got excited and decided to have two food based events on the one weekend.  Clearly we hadn’t thought this through. Friday was to be a sunset picnic on the beach and Saturday night was homemade tapas.  Tapas…..yum….
Conversation about these events brought about varied states of anxiety due to the lack of food options available in our small town.  Back in Australia I often take the lazy way out (obviously I’m not a foodie) and drop by a bakery or deli for such snacks, but that just isn’t an option here.  Firstly, anything baked is baked with sugar.  Yes, sugar.  And a deli?  The only options really available are the (pricey) foreign supermarket 20 mins up the road or the local market where the delicacies range from strange and unpronounceable tropical fruits to fried bugs.
While the picnic didn’t show off my best purchasing skills, I did fare better on tapas night.  Between us all we visited the local market and the foreign supermarket.  I was on the foreign supermarket team and traipsed up and down the isles searching for tapas-like products that had an English label.  I avoided the copious amounts of Swedish and Russian food, but I did manage to get distracted in the foreign wine section.
The afternoon of searching meant that we enjoyed a fabulous evening of rarely purchased delicacies.  Squid, prawns, ensalada caprese and sautéed asparagus were on the menu.  And wine.  After all, it isn’t a meal without wine.
